Many people consider writing as a vocation. Some just pick up the pen in retirement for pure pleasure.

Your thoughts on volunteerism are spot on, D. Plenty of problems that need solving. I volunteer for the NOAA Marine Mammal Network - what a bunch of great people (and other mammals too :)
